What is the difference between an open and closed trap bar?

An open trap bar is a U-shaped bar that allows you to easily walk in and out of lifts. The open design also allows you to easily diversify your movements and achieve a full range of motion.

Alternatively, a closed trap bar is shaped like a full hexagon, which is where the name hex bar comes from. The closed design does mean you have to step in and out of the enclosed bar before and after lifting, but it can also offer additional support for heavy, compound lifts.

How much does a trap bar weigh?

Open trap bars tend to weight between 20kg – 30kg without any plates. At Wolverson Fitness, our open trap bar weighs 25kg, weighing in just 2.5kg above a standard Olympic hex bar.

Is an open trap bar the same as a shrug bar?

Yes, open trap bars and a shrug bars refer to the same piece of equipment. Whilst commonly used for shoulder shrugging movements, these bars are incredibly versatile and can be used for a wide range of compound moves, including squats and deadlifts. The same bars can also be referred to as hex bars.
