Here at Wolverson Fitness, we are the leading experts when it comes to gym installs and we want to help you build the perfect home gym that fits your budget.
This article will recommend the best home gym equipment to fit your needs and help make your decision about what to buy easier.
Building your own gym at home is way more convenient, time-efficient, and (potentially) cheaper than going to a commercial gym where you have to pay a membership fee every month.
The main pieces of equipment you’ll want are; barbell, weight plates, collars, floor tiles and a rig or rack (with dipping station and pull up bar).
Once you’ve bought the essentials you can look at additional purchases such as kettlebells, dumbbells, cardio equipment and maybe even something like a deadlift platform depending on your space.
If you’re reading this then I’m guessing you’re thinking about building your own gym at home either in the garage or a spare room.
It could be for any of the following reasons:
You should be confident at the end of this article that you have the information needed to decide what equipment you should be buying for your home gym.
However, before we continue, there are some pros and cons to having a home gym so I will outline them here for you.
So with that said and done let’s dive in and help you decide what home gym essentials you should buy in 2020…
The essential pieces of equipment you’re going to want to buy first are as follows:
Getting these first for your home gym will allow you to do a variety of different workouts and effective exercises for all major muscle groups.
If you’re serious about building a home gym we highly recommend getting these pieces of kit first and then focus on some additional equipment after.
Once you have the essentials in place you can then look at some additional kit:
Then there is a load of non-essential stuff you can add to your home gym as you go along such as:
It would also be useful for you to have things such as chalk, weightlifting shoes, a lifting belt and dipping belt etc.
Let’s take a look at all this home gym equipment in more detail…
The essentials are what you will need in order to train at home.
Whether you plan on doing CrossFit or traditional Bodybuilding type workouts,
this equipment will cover all the fundamental lifts and compound movements in your training.
The barbell is probably the most important piece of kit for your home gym. All the big lifts and movements in your training will involve a bar.
The majority of your training is going to require a solid barbell, so it’s definitely worth investing in a quality bar.
If you are serious about your training and investing in the right bar, you can even come to Wolverson Fitness and try out our range of bars.
We have a number of bars to suit your needs and budget, here are a few bars we highly recommend for your home gym.
Obviously, you aren’t going to be lifting an empty bar in your new home gym so you will need to invest in a solid set of plates to pair with your new bar.
Again we have a range of different plates but we highly recommend the extremely popular Bison Hi-Impact Bumpers.
They are also our cheapest plates which is a bonus, however, see which plates you think will be best for you…
A power rack, or squat rack, is a going to be another key component for your home gym.
Ideally, you will have a power rack that has a pull-up bar and a dipping station attachment - a landmine attachment can also be very useful for push and pull exercises.
Many power racks also have pegs to hold your weight plates.
This is what you’ll use for your main compound lifts such as the squat, bench press, pull-up, overhead press and chin-up.

A final word on building your affordable home gym…
Building your own home gym is the best way to make your workouts as convenient as possible, and this can work wonders for compliance (long-term results and commitment to training).
Obviously, it does require a decent amount of space and money. Here at Wolverson, we give you the best price possible whilst maintaining the quality of all our gym equipment.
If you’re willing to spend about £2000 and have about 200 square feet of space to spare, then you can have a great home gym setup that will last you a lifetime.
We recommend you set up your home gym in a 1st-floor room with a concrete floor, a garage is an ideal space for this.
Finally, here are a couple of videos our good friends The Lean Machines shared when they were building their perfect home gyms with Wolverson Fitness…
